Indra Devi, a life dedicated to peace, love and the spread of Yoga

Indra Devi, Mataji (Mother) as people liked to call her, was a unique woman, who could be said in advance for the time when she had to live. Born in Russia, when the nineteenth century became extinct, within an aristocratic family, from a young age she “felt” in her heart a strong attraction for India, its culture, its spirituality; her will and the circumstances of her life took her to that country where she felt at home. There she studied Yoga with great teachers such as Kuvalayananda or Sri Krishnamacharya, from whom she knew how to win thanks to her aptitudes and capacity, recognition and respect despite being a female and western teacher. She soon understood that everything she had learned would be very useful in the West, so she adapted the ancient teachings of Yoga with great wisdom to our idiosyncrasies. But her merit was not limited to it, "The first lady of Yoga", as she was baptized in the United States of America in the 1950s, wrote books, taught courses and gave countless talks and conferences, giving her message of peace, love and spirituality, throughout the world.
It can be said that she had the unique gift of reaching the hearts of people. Many people who were skeptical about her or her messages, totally changed their points of view after listening to it. She knew how to respect those who shared her ideas and those who did not, that “not imposing”, the warmth of her presence and her sense of humor “disarmed” and convinced even the most difficult of her detractors.
Although Mataji is no longer physically in this world, his legacy that knew how to transcend all kinds of borders, will continue to be always present through the spread of Yoga that the Indra Devi Foundation carries out day after day in charge of those who were the most disciples direct in Argentina from this great teacher, its current directors: Iana and David Lifar.
